About the Role


We’re looking for friendly and reliable Retail Volunteers to help launch and support our brand-new Hospice Shop on Union Street, Glasgow. Our shops play a vital role in funding specialist hospice care across Glasgow, and volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.


As a Retail Volunteer, you’ll help create a warm, welcoming, and organised shop environment for customers, donors, and supporters. Whether you're on the shop floor greeting customers or helping behind the scenes with donations, your time will directly support the work of the Hospice.


What You’ll Do


Typical volunteering activities include:


Giving customers a warm and friendly welcome
Assisting with sales and serving on the till (full training provided)
Sorting, organising, and preparing donated items for the shop floor
Creating eye-catching displays and helping merchandise stock
Keeping the shop clean, tidy, and safe for everyone
Helping accept donations and thanking donors
Supporting safe customer flow in a busy city-centre environment
Working alongside shop staff and other volunteers as part of a supportive team

When We Need You (Suggested Timings)


We offer flexible volunteering to suit you.


Typical shifts include:


Morning: 10:00am – 1:00pm
Afternoon: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Full day (optional): 10:00am – 4:00pm

You can volunteer:


Once a week
Once a fortnight
Or on a flexible, ad-hoc basis

Most volunteers give 2–3 hours per week, but any time is welcomed.


The shop will be open Monday–Saturday, with occasional Sunday trading during busy periods.

Customer service
Till and card-machine use
Donation handling

Emergency protocols
Manual handling (if needed)

Ongoing supervision & support


A named Shop Manager and Assistant Manager will support you each shift
Regular check-ins to see how you’re getting on
Open-door approach – ask questions anytime
Opportunities to learn new tasks at your pace

Expenses & wellbeing


Travel expenses reimbursed (in line with PPWH volunteer policy)

Experience required

You don’t need experience – just a positive attitude and a willingness to help.
This role is a great fit if you are:

Someone who enjoys working in a busy retail environment

Travel details

By Train:
Glasgow Queen Street Station is just a 2–3 minute walk away. Exit the station onto Queen Street and walk south to number 54.

By Subway:
Buchanan Street Subway Station is about a 5-minute walk. Exit onto Buchanan Street, head toward George Square, then turn onto Queen Street.

By Bus:
Many city centre buses stop near George Square or Buchanan Street. From there, it’s a short walk to Queen Street.


By Car:
Drive into Glasgow City Centre and follow signs for Queen Street or Geo
