Thirlestane Castle Volunteer Helper

Become part of the long and wonderful volunteering history at Thirlestane Castle by being a member of the team that brings its heritage to life for everyone to share.

Our volunteer helpers are friendly and welcoming of our visitors. They support tour guides and then provide hospitality to visitors in the tearoom and gift shop. We are looking for people who enjoy engaging with a range of different people and who are good communicators.

Role description: Volunteers play a crucial role within the Castle. Often working in partnership with volunteer tour guides, helpers act as a first point of contact, and support guides to show individuals and groups around the castle in a safe manner. Volunteers also provide hospitality support to groups in the Castle’s tea room and gift shop. Depending on the volunteer’s interests, tasks can be tailored to suit these.
Main tasks:
• Greet visitors as soon as they arrive at the castle. This includes meeting coach groups and welcoming them to the castle.
• Be friendly and welcoming.
• Make sure visitors stay safe during a tour and keep up with the guide.
• See to any visitors with mobility issues supporting them to use alternate entrances or staircases within the castle.
• Learn about any necessary safety procedures and explain this to visitors
• Provide any further assistance that might be needed, including during emergencies
• Provide hospitality to visitors in the tea room and gift shop (training provided

Time commitment: Whilst we understand that volunteers have other calls on their time, we would hope that you could commit to either a morning or afternoon session lasting approximately 3 hours, but we will happily work with you on this matter.

Experience required

Previous experience in a historic house would be an advantage but is not necessary. An engaging personality and the ability to happily interact with visitors is more important. An interest in Scottish History and an ability to speak clearly and concisely, or a passion for gardening and the great outdoors.
