People who come to Dalkeith CAB for information and advice on issues like benefits, debt, housing or employment are often worried about their situation and aren’t sure what to expect. We’re looking for a volunteer who will welcome them and explain what will happen next, so they feel less anxious and unsure. Some tasks you will carry out as part of the role are;
· Engaging with clients in community settings to assess their immediate needs while providing information and advice to help them address these.
· Referring clients to specialist assistance in or out with the CAB where required.
· Taking practical steps to support clients facing financial hardship.
· Helping clients develop skills, knowledge and confidence to manage their finances more effectively.
· Working within the policies and procedures of Dalkeith CAB, including quality and diversity, health and safety, Confidentiality and Data Protection.
· Entering client data on our case management system promptly and accurately, ensuring all information is processed in line with bureau policies including confidentiality and Data Protection.
Experience required
· The ability to engage sensitively with people who are vulnerable and/or in distressing situations.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills with a good understanding of the English language.
· Confidence in using IT and a willingness to learn new skills.
· The ability to maintain strong boundaries.
· The ability to practice self-awareness while working respectfully with clients, staff and other volunteers.
Travel details
The interview and initial training will take place at the Dalkeith CAB office. The volunteer role will take place at Dalkeith CAB and across various outreaches in Midlothian. All venues are linked to bus routes.
Dalkeith is also serviced by train and there is a free car park on Old Edinburgh Road in Dalkeith. Volunteers are reimbursed for travel expenses monthly or Bi-weekly for car fuel or travel on public transport. Volunteers must retain evidence of their public transport expenses.

Travel Expenses will be reimbursed monthly. We can reimburse travel expenses Bi-weekly for those on lower incomes.
Support
Training details
Training takes place in a supportive learning environment at Dalkeith CAB. We have robust training Adviser Training Programme that is recognised at SCQF level 6. The volunteer must be willing to undertake continuous training and feedback and will have regular support and supervision available. We provide mixture of self-directed online learning, shadowing and finally practical experiences for the development of volunteer roles. We can also supply upskilling courses suited to the volunteer role needs for professional development

Minimum age: 16
Availability
Volunteers (aged 16-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
